Hermes Agent Setup Guide
Free
Set up a local agent that can explain a small project before acting.
BEGINNER / NOUS RESEARCH AGENT
1. Set the stage
Hermes is a local agent, not just a model name. You need its installer, an approved model provider, and a small practice folder.
1. Install the official app
Use the Windows or macOS desktop installer linked from hermes-agent.nousresearch.com. Reopen your terminal after installation.
2. Choose a provider
Run hermes setup or hermes model. Complete the provider sign-in or API-key flow. Confirm usage charges and choose a supported model.
3. Limit the first workspace
Open a practice folder and run hermes. Start with a read-only explanation. Review enabled tools before allowing file or terminal actions.
4. Verify & continue
Ask a follow-up, then test hermes --continue. Use hermes doctor if configuration fails; keep the basic chat working before adding tools.
2. Lean working stack
| Stage | Role | | --- | --- | | Hermes | Inspect & assist | | Model provider | Supply the model | | Git | Track changes | | Human review | Approve actions |
Arrows in the visual sheet show the order of work. External connections require separate setup. Optional tools may be replaced with ones you already use. This is a suggested stack for this task, not a universal optimum.
Start with one provider
Avoid fallback chains and background schedules until one normal conversation works. Keep provider credentials in its supported secret settings.
Add one capability at a time
Use hermes tools to review access. Add a trusted skill only for a task you repeat; messaging gateways and MCP are optional.
3. First practice task
Read this practice project without changing it. Explain its main entry point, list the commands documented for running it, and identify what you cannot determine from the files.
Your setup is working when
Hermes shows the chosen provider, responds correctly, and resumes the same session. No unexpected file changes occur during the read-only task.
Troubleshooting
No response? Recheck hermes model. Command missing? Open a new terminal. Lost session? Check hermes sessions list and the active profile.
