BEGINNER / EDITOR ASSISTANCE

1. Set the stage

Copilot is separate from GitHub repository hosting. You need an eligible account and a supported editor or the available GitHub web experience.

1. Choose the editor route

Install Visual Studio Code if needed. Sign in to GitHub and check that Copilot is available for your personal account or organization seat.

2. Enable the official integration

Use VS Code's official Copilot setup and sign-in flow. Confirm the publisher before installing any extension suggested by a tutorial.

3. Start with a question

Open a practice repository. Ask Copilot Chat to explain a small function using the file as context before accepting code changes.

4. Test the suggestion

Make a small change on a branch. Read the suggestion, run its test, and inspect the diff rather than accepting an entire solution blindly.

2. Lean working stack

| Stage | Role | | --- | --- | | VS Code | Edit the code | | Copilot | Suggest & explain | | Tests | Verify the result | | GitHub PR | Review the change |

Arrows in the visual sheet show the order of work. External connections require separate setup. Optional tools may be replaced with ones you already use. This is a suggested stack for this task, not a universal optimum.

Context improves suggestions

Name the file, expected behavior, and edge case. A precise task is more useful than asking it to fix an entire application at once.

Check generated dependencies

Use project conventions and installed libraries. Verify any newly suggested package or API before adding it to the repository.

3. First practice task

Explain this validation function. Suggest a small test for an empty input and one for valid input. Use the repository's existing test framework and do not change production behavior yet.

Your setup is working when

You can explain the suggestions, the tests run under the project's framework, and accepted code is visible in the reviewed diff.

Troubleshooting

No access? Check the assigned seat. No context? Open the intended file. Bad suggestion? Reject it and give a concrete counterexample.
